A micropower, low noise, and low dropout regulator is the LT1763CS8-1.5. The devices have a dropout voltage of 300 mV and can deliver 500 mA of output current. They are the perfect option because of their low 30μA quiescent current, which is designed for use in battery-powered systems. Quiescent current is well controlled; unlike many other regulators, it does not increase during dropout.
Low output noise is a significant characteristic of the LT1763CS8-1.5 regulator. Output noise decreases to 20 μVRMS over a 10Hz to 100kHz bandwidth with the addition of an external 0.01μF bypass capacitor. With output capacitors as low as 3.3 μF, the LT1763CS8-1.5 regulator is stable. There is no need for the series resistance that other regulators demand when using small ceramic capacitors.
Reverse battery protection, current limiting, heat limiting, and reverse current protection are all included in the internal protection circuitry. The parts are available as an adjustable device with a 1.22V reference voltage as well as fixed output voltages of 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3V, 3.3V, and 5V. The LT1763CS8-1.5 regulator is offered in low profile (4mm*3mm*0.75mm) DFN packages with 12 and 8 leads, respectively.
