A low drop voltage regulator with a 3 A maximum output current capacity is the LD1085. At the highest output current, dropout is guaranteed to occur at a maximum of 1.2 V; it gets smaller at lower loads. The earlier 3-terminal adjustable regulators are pin-to-pin compatible with the LD1085 but perform better in terms of drop and output tolerance.
The LD1085 regulator's quiescent current goes into the load, increasing efficiency, in contrast to PNP regulators, which waste some of the output current as quiescent current. For stability, only a 10 F minimum capacitor is required. The device comes in TO-220, TO-220FP, D2PAK, and D2PAK/A packaging options. The regulator can achieve an output voltage tolerance of 1% at 25 °C thanks to on-chip trimming.
