A low drop voltage regulator with a 1.5 A output current limit is the LD1086. At the highest output current, dropout is guaranteed to occur at a maximum of 1.2 V; it gets smaller at lower loads. The LD1086 provides greater performance in terms of drop and output tolerance while still being pin-to-pin compatible with previous 3-terminal adjustable regulators. The efficiency of the LD1086 regulator is increased by the quiescent current flowing into the load, as opposed to PNP regulators where a portion of the output current is squandered as quiescent current.
For stability, only a 10 F (bare minimum) capacitor is required. The device is offered in the following packages: TO-220, D2PAK, D2PAK/A, DPAK, or DFN8 (4x4). The regulator can achieve an output voltage tolerance of within 1% at 25 °C thanks to on-chip trimming. The TO-220 and DPAK packages of the LD1086 are offered in automotive grade for variable output voltages. The devices have passed the PAT, SYL, and SBL statistical tests, and they are qualified for the automotive market under the AEC-Q100 specification in the temperature range of - 40 °C to 125 °C.
