It uses the Tube package in order to optimize the performance of this voltage regulator. There are two types of analog ICs in this voltage regulator 12v: SWITCHING REGULATOR ICs, which are the ones used in older voltage regulator 12vs. Space savings are achieved by placing this voltage regulator in the TO-220-5 package.
