A family of micropower low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulators is the TPS71xx integrated circuits. By using a PMOS device in place of the traditional pnp pass transistor, dropout voltage and quiescent current are reduced by an order of magnitude compared to normal LDO performance.

The dropout voltage is very low (maximum of 32 mV at an output current of 100 mA for the TPS7150) and exactly proportional to the output current since the PMOS device operates as a low-value resistor (see Figure 1). The quiescent current is also very low and unaffected by output loading because the PMOS pass element is a voltage-driven device (usually 285 A over the entire range of output current, 0 mA to 500 mA). For battery-powered systems, these two crucial requirements result in a significant increase in operating life. The LDO family also has a sleep mode; turning off the regulator by sending a TTL high signal to EN (enable) lowers the quiescent current to a maximum of 0.5 A at TJ=25°C.
